Madam President, Excellencies,
I want to start by thanking Guyana for convening this timely and important discussion. Poland aligns itself with the statement delivered earlier by the European Union.
It is deplorable that more than three years from launching its full-scale aggression against Ukraine, Russia shows no genuine interest in ending its brutal war.
While Ukraine has proposed an unconditional ceasefire as a prerequisite for wider peace talks, and the world supported this notion, Russia continues to escalate its demands amounting to Ukraine’s capitulation, and unashamedly boasts of plans to seize more Ukrainian land.
The cornerstone of those demands is the resolution of what Russia calls the “root causes of the conflict”. We fully concur - the “root causes” of this war which have to be resolved are Russia’s neocolonial aspirations which constitute a threat to peace and stability of Ukraine, Europe, and the entire UN system.
Earlier today, President Putin claimed in Sankt Petersburg that “all of Ukraine is ours”. Kremlin is hoping to restore the Soviet times when Kyiv was subordinated and Ukraine had no free will and right to decide on its future. But, as we see every day, Ukrainian determination to resist Russia is stronger than aggressor’s missiles.
Russia’s actions demonstrate that it sees peace talks as an inconsequential sideshow. The Russian military campaign in Ukraine has intensified significantly, with 2025 well on track to become the deadliest year for Russian forces since the beginning of the full-scale war.
Ukraine has the unquestionable right to defend itself, including by targeting aggressor’s military assets. Poland will continue to stand with the victim of the aggression – just as we have done since day one.
We will also continue supporting Ukraine in seeking a genuine, just and lasting peace based on the UN Charter and international law, in line with the will of Ukraine’s citizens. That is what we should all support.
Madam President, Excellencies,
Poland strongly and invariably condemns Russian simulated engagement in the peace process, kidnapping Ukrainian children and its desire to destroy Ukrainian statehood.
In his attempt to resuscitate the Russian Empire and to feed his personal ambition, President Putin has already sacrificed hundreds of thousands of lives of its own citizens and robbed them of a peaceful and prosperous future. It is time for Russia to end this war.
I thank you.
