Mister President, Excellencies,
At the outset let me thank the Greek presidency for convening this important meeting and for accepting our request to participate in it. I would also like to thank the distinguished briefers for their insights.
Mister President,
We meet on the one thousand one hundred and ninety first day of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine.
From the very first day Poland – along with other UN Members – has been appealing for putting an end to the Russian war against Ukraine. All we wish for is a just and lasting peace at our borders. There have already been one thousand one hundred and ninety one opportunities to end this aggression by introducing an immediate, full, and unconditional ceasefire that could open way to genuine peace negotiations based on the full realization of international law. Unfortunately, for one thousand one hundred and ninety one days president Putin has been deaf to the demands of the world. He pretends to be open to negotiations, while in reality he simply plays for time in order to attain stronger position on the battlefield, no matter how many human lives it will cost. Russia has consistently and bluntly rebuffed any attempts to find a way to initiate real peace talks offered by different entities.
Mister President,
Best illustration of Russia’s lack of commitment to de-escalation was provided by the largest drones attack against Ukrainian cities since the beginning of the war, in parallel to the last weekend’s Russian-Ukrainian exchange of 1000 prisoners of war, the latter we welcome as a positive development.
We condemn the latest Russian missile attacks on cities in Ukraine. Right after this body – the Security Council – finished debating on the absolute necessity to protect the civilians in times of an armed conflict, many innocent Ukrainians died or were wounded, including defenceless children. As per recent reports, April 2025 has been deadliest month for children in Ukraine since June 2022 – at least 19 children were killed and 78 injured. We continue to call for holding Russia fully accountable for violations of international law, human rights, war crimes and crime of aggression, at both state and individual levels.
Mister President,
Poland actively supports U.S.-led diplomatic efforts towards peace. To be sustainable, peace must be just, comprehensive, and based on the UN Charter and its provisions of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the equality of states. And it must be accompanied by security guarantees not for Russia, but for the future without Russian attacks not only against Ukraine, but also against other European countries.
In conclusion, Mister President, Poland will remain determined to continue a multi-faceted support for Ukraine – including through financial, economic, humanitarian, military, and diplomatic means – for as long as it takes to help Ukraine exercise its inherent right to self-defence. Such resolve – in face of the unprovoked and illegal invasion – remains a joint obligation of the international community.
I thank you.
